We immerse students in scientific training and offering them a taste of life every bit a graduate educatee. Each summer for three years, we bring in six students from Xavier Academy of Louisiana to the University of California San Diego to participate in the Summertime Training Academy for Research in the Sciences (STARS) plan and partner them with UCSD faculty and graduate student mentors. Our programme includes viii weeks of daily lab inquiry, student evolution workshops, graduate record exam (GRE) preparation, teambuilding physical exercises, career workshops and social activities. At the end of the program, each pupil gives a presentation at the UCSD Summer Research Symposium.

If admitted to a Ph.D. program at any UC campus, UCSD Xavier participants will receive fiscal back up coordinated betwixt the UC Office of the President and the UC campus.

A critical goal of the Initiative is to accept more HBCU alumni consummate UC PhD programs. Thus, increasing awareness about and access to UC and its incredible research enterprise is important. To facilitate this goal, UC will waive the application fee for UC-HBCU Initiative alumni who employ to whatsoever of UC's over 700 bookish graduate programs at any or all of our x campuses. If admitted to a UC PhD program, they will receive competitive funding packages offer at least four years of funding (tuition and fees and stipend/salary back up). Funding rates and number of years depend on the section norms of the relevant degree program; some department packages are for more than four years. The funding is price-shared by the UC Office of the President and the relevant campus (with UCOP contributing up to 2 years of support). For funding eligibility students must employ inside 5 years of completing their current HBCU caste.

My experience in the STARS Program at UCSD was astonishing. I made many friendships and anybody I encountered was very overnice and accepting. My experience in the STARS program was incredible to say the least. The program funded a GRE class for us and our books for the graduate exam too. During the program they even provided food and snacks for everyone that needed it due to financial restrictions. Though I was only in San Diego for 8 weeks I actually felt like I was a office of a larger community. I really enjoyed participating in the UCSD - STARS program over the summer. This program allowed me the opportunity to join a well-known and credited neuroscience research lab for 8 weeks. Inside this time, I learned the skills needed to conduct and present a complete research projection under a cracking grouping of mentors. Through this feel, I was able to solidify my decision to pursue a PH.D. in neuroscience. In addition to the wonderful research feel, I had a peachy time exploring San Diego and enjoying its wonderful conditions! The STARS program planned many enjoyable events that were both fun and informative. The program provides costless GRE prep, a graduate student abet, graduate schoolhouse information seminars, and fun activities! I would definitely recommend this program to all young scientists interested in conducting summer inquiry with the intention of pursuing a career in scientific discipline!
